Going back to the 27th of October 1968, the day Monk and his band (Charlie Rouse on tenor, Larry Gales on bass, Ben Riley behind the drums) played a one-off highschool gig in the Californian town of Palo Alto. The school janitor tuned Monk's piano, and was allowed to tape the concert in return: by far the coolest anecdote I heard this month. And needless to say, the music's not too shabby either.
