Sure Gives Me The Blues

Let's call today blue yodel day, with the singing brakeman showing us the way. Taylormade, no hand me downs. It's the truth, honey. Hey hey.

In The Right Place

Nearly forgotten soul singer Joe Hicks wasn't called Mighty Joe for nothing. Funky but clean, if you know what I mean.

Coming Down

"At the breakfast table, with a whiskey bottle in my hand..." Start a song like that and I'm game. How about you?

Want You Back

Faithful Robyn Hitchcock recently paid tribute to Syd Barrett on what would have been the late Floyd frontman's 75th birthday. Will you please keep on the track?

Traneing In

Chasing the Trane today, with the obscure Descendants Of Mike & Phoebe, with the great tenor player Clifford Laconia Jordan and, last but certainly not least, with his talented widow Alice.

Began To Speak

Had I discovered Seaside Ghost Tales just a little bit earlier, this collection of hypnotic gnostic folk trips from down under would have made my end-of-year list for sure. Using more or less exotic instruments like tablas, lute and dulcimer, head Trappist Adam Geoffrey Cole often recalls Current 93 at its most melodic here. This was Cole's last project under the Trappist Afterland moniker by the way; curious to see what he'll come up with next.

Just Say Less

Just got the sad news that Mark Keds no longer walks among us. The talented singer and guitarist of London pop-punk formation the Senseless Things was only 50 years old. Miss him.

Everybody Knows

Numero's latest entry in its acclaimed Eccentric Soul series focuses on the tiny Cuca label from Wisconsin. Lots of treasure to be found as usual; take this fine fine track by Harvey Scales for instance. "You don't even remember my name, you're so wrong..."

Call Me Crazy

How much did it cost, indeed. Militant jazz from '69. Right on, and swings like crazy, too.

Sure Can Fly

We're in Memphis, Tennessee in the year of 1928. Gus Cannon plays jug, with Elijah Avery on guitar and Noah Lewis on harmonica. Can you do the Pig Ankle Strut? Surely one of the weirdest and otherwordly tunes ever put to shellac.

Jumped That Train

A couple of fine recent covers, plus the originals of course. Yo La Tengo honours my beloved Ronnie Lane in patented Fakebook style, while Lambchop grooves to Ohio's artpunks the Mirrors. Good taste, y'all.

Dutch Treat

It's the spring of 1967, and maestro Sonny Rollins plays a couple of gigs and radio shows in the Netherlands. He's backed by talented locals Ruud Jacobs (bass) and Han Bennink (drums), which works a treat indeed. Great find from the Dutch Jazz Archive.

Lot Of Soul

Welcome anywhere you come from, gringos. Let's ring in this new year together with some old fashioned patchanka by Manu Chao and the gang. Here's to a happy and healthy 2021, y'all. ¡Salud!
