Hello

A welcome sign of life from Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, and in glorious lofi at that. Fine mix of old folk songs and Dylan covers here, with as the undisputed highlight a tasteful homage to the late great John Prine. The bittersweet Hello In There just may be the finest song the master ever wrote, and Gillian's delicate take on it just might bring a tear to an old cynic's eye. Which is no mean feat, folks.

Hard Way To Go

Just got the sad news that John Prine has passed away due to Corona virus complications. The rightly revered country and folk singer/songwriter was 73. Seeing Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan perform together on tv in the late sixties, Prine felt he "could fit straight in between the two of 'em" and he was right of course. Miss him.

Swinging In The Breeze

It's been thirteen years since his last outing, but the charming Tree Of Forgiveness is definitely worth the long wait. At 71, with a voice that's slowly going, old man John Prine is still going to town alright. “I once had a family, but they up and left me with nothin’ but an eight track: Another Side of George Jones...” Good company I'd say.

Find A Key

John Prine once did some recording in the legendary Sun Studios of Sam Phillips in Memphis, Tennessee. The resulting Pink Cadillac mostly gets a lot of flak for some reason or other, but I've always had a weak spot for it. Not a perfect record by far, but you can't go wrong with the two tasty songs below for instance.
