Glad to see Dylan requesting Hank (who I think was one of Dylan's very biggest influences, a long with Woody).Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07401395043889488168noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8448885095667982281.post-76917366949877057882009-01-13T22:38:00.000+01:002009-01-13T22:38:00.000+01:00Just read the following in a recent book by Derek ...Just read the following in a recent book by Derek Barker on Dylan´s cover versions and influences (more on that in a later post): ´Dylan, who appears to be a bit of a fan od Jo El Sonnier, was seen hugging the king of cajun after his set at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival in ´03. Sonnier then came back onstage for an extra encore stating that Dylan had requested that he play Jambalaya. Now how cool is that?Ramone666https://www.blogger.com/profile/08399648428256486747noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8448885095667982281.post-19223266584606520522009-01-12T17:53:00.000+01:002009-01-12T17:53:00.000+01:00Also, the song Jambalaya, in particular, tends to ...Also, the song Jambalaya, in particular, tends to be played with a very pronounced back beat, which fits the ska style.Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07401395043889488168noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8448885095667982281.post-60007431315902618982009-01-12T17:34:00.000+01:002009-01-12T17:34:00.000+01:00Ska sounding a lot like Fats isn't an accident...Ska sounding a lot like Fats isn't an accident. In the 1950s and '60s, Caribbean nations could occasionally pick up American AM radio stations from New Orleans and Miami, weather permitting and usually at night. The sound of Fats, Lloyd Price, Huey Smith, Smiley Lewis, Professor Longhair, etc. drove the Jamaicans nuts, the most talented of whom consciously digested the syncopated funk they heard coming from America and translated it into their own peculiar brand kind of R&B.

Paul - video coming soon.LDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14728242342012983640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8448885095667982281.post-24759889666645960022009-01-12T03:42:00.000+01:002009-01-12T03:42:00.000+01:00Big Steve - Great point about Fats Domino's versio...Big Steve - Great point about Fats Domino's version sounding like a precursor to ska.Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07401395043889488168noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8448885095667982281.post-29676824842869109312009-01-12T02:57:00.000+01:002009-01-12T02:57:00.000+01:00I love Fats Domino's version. Didn't know any of that history.

There are two Moon Mullican songs on the Hank 'Unreleased Recordings' including Hank mentioning him by name as he introduces 'Cherokke Boogie'.

Great Jambalaya cover on video at Daily Motion and You Tube.I think Daily Motion longer and better. Has Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Fats Dominio doing Jambalaya.

Comes up on search. Really a moving tribute to Hank.

John WAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8448885095667982281.post-19401963065227044132009-01-11T23:07:00.000+01:002009-01-11T23:07:00.000+01:00This history and performance survery of "Jambalaya...This history and performance survery of "Jambalaya" is what blogs like yours excel at doing.
